MISSION
The mission of this program is to re-introduce lacrosse to Avon youth in grades KG-8 and help to instill a love for the game in each athlete by:
- Creating a fun environment for everyone to learn and grow
- Teaching lacrosse fundamentals to both athletes and parent volunteers
- Promoting teamwork through competition
- Developing confidence in athletes by celebrating the process of learning, rather than outcomes or end results
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
This program was designed specifically to fill the gap between Fall and Winter sports so there is minimal conflict or overlap with other AYS sports programs. The program will run in the Fall and feed into the existing Avon Lacrosse Club teams for the Spring season.
The KG - 5th grade program will use the USA Lacrosse Flex 6 Model of play to teach the fundamentals of lacrosse in a way that is flexible, fully non-contact and fun! Because the program is non-contact, it eliminates the burden of protective pads, equipment, and gear. The only thing needed is a stick!
The Middle School program will transition to standard lacrosse equipment, while still using the smaller field scrimmage format of the Flex 6 model.
Each session will start with skill development and end in a scrimmage game where athletes can practice putting it all together.

Because Lacrosse is so new to most people, we plan to run practices in a clinic style, relying heavily on the Avon Lacrosse Club high school coaches and players to support clinic stations.
Parent volunteers (Team Managers and Assistant Coaches) will work alongside Avon Lacrosse Club representatives to teach and guide the athletes through each session. As parent volunteers gain a better understanding of the sport, they will begin to run stations and manage the sidelines during scrimmages as well. If you have helped as an assistant in the past, we encourage you to volunteer as a Head Coach this season.
LOCATION
Practices and scrimmages will all be held at 104 S. Co. Rd. 625 E., Avon.
GEAR REQUIRED
AYS will provide players with a reversible pinnie to use for the season. The pinnie will be returned at the end of the season in exchange for a shirt that is yours to keep.
Equipment links are provided below with the option to purchase, or give you an idea of what is required.
KG - 4th Grade players are asked to provide:
- Lacrosse Stick – Please review the stick recommendations and links to purchase below. If you prefer to not purchase a stick, Avon Lacrosse Club is providing lacrosse sticks to rent during this program. These sticks are not top of the line, but they are sufficient for athletes to use as they learn.
- Cleats are recommended, but are not required. Metal spikes or track specific cleats are not allowed.
6th - 8th Grade players are asked to provide:
- Girls
- Lacrosse stick, goggles, and mouthguard*. Please review the equipment recommendations and links to purchase below.
- Cleats are recommended, but not required. Metal spikes and track specific cleats are not allowed.
The Avon Lacrosse Club has helmets and a few sets of pads available to rent. If equipment is a barrier, please contact the Commissioner for rental options as well as any other gear-related questions at [email protected].
LACROSSE EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDATIONS
Please note: Men’s and women’s lacrosse sticks are very different. The pocket is much deeper on a men’s stick so it’s easier to keep the ball inside and therefore less frustrating for beginners. For the sake of this program, we will not disallow “incorrect” sticks. However, if you are purchasing a stick, we recommend you purchase the equipment your child would use regardless of this program, as you are also investing in their continued interest in the sport.
There is a wide range of price points to consider when purchasing equipment. The selection below includes great options for beginners. You can also view more beginner sticks from Destination Athlete HERE and more sticks for all levels through Dick's Sporting Goods HERE. For recommendations on more advanced sticks, feel free to reach out to the Lacrosse Commissioner directly at [email protected].
