Spring Rec Softball Program Overview

AJAA offers recreational and instructional leagues in girls' t-ball and slow/fast pitch softball intended to: 
 - Involving everyone in a positive team experience
 - 
Developing fundamental softball skills
 - 
Building player confidence
 - 
Emphasizing player effort to play well
 - 
Practicing good sportsmanship
 - 
Considering all players as WINNERS regardless of score!


AGE DIVISIONS
6U/T-BALL League: 
 
Equipment:
Ball Size Needed – 11”
T
Ball or Softball Bat
Helmet
Face Mask is MANDATORY for Pitcher’s Helper Position
This league is for 1st year players, typically 5 and 6 year old girls. This league provides heavy coach and parent involvement. Team size is kept to a minimum to provide the girls with additional batting and fielding opportunities.  Coaches pitch to each batter. After the maximum number of pitches are made by the coach, the player will then hit off the tee. The player will swing at as many balls off the tee until a fair ball is hit. Catcher position for this league typically is an assistant coach or team volunteer.  Players will be rotated between the infield and outfield to provide a maximum learning experience. This league focuses on teaching players the fundamentals of the softball sport.  Games will be limited to a one (1) hour time limit. ALL PLAYERS ARE CONSIDERED WINNERS.

8U League:

Face Mask is MANDATORY for Pitcher’s Helper Position
Heart Guard is MANDATORY for Pitcher’s Helper Position
Catcher’s Gear – Each team is provided with a set of Catcher’s Equipment
This league typically consists of 1st and 2nd graders. This league provides heavy coach and parent involvement. Coaches pitch to each batter. Teaching fundamentals and rules is still the main focus in this league. Although this is still considered an instructional league, players are taught the rules of the game so they are prepared to move up to the next level. Players will be rotated between the infield and outfield to provide a maximum learning experience. Two (2) coaches are permitted to be in the outfield with their team to continue teaching and guiding game plays and strategies. New rules are introduced and taught.  Coaches still pitch in this league, but a player serves as the catcher. Games will be limited to a one (1) hour and 15 minute time limit.

10U League:

ASA Approved Softball Bat
Helmet with Face Mask
Face Mask is MANDATORY for ALL Pitchers
Catcher’s Gear – All Catcher’s must wear the required equipment per ASA Rules
NO METAL CLEATS
The teams of this league consist of 3rd and 4th grade girls. Players will begin pitching in this league - fast pitch. Pitching distance is 35 feet. Coaches continue teaching fundaments and game strategies. New Rules such as bunting and base stealing are introduced. Games will be limited to a one (1) hour and 15 minute time limit.

12U & 13-18ULeague:

Ball Size Needed – 12”
ASA Approved Softball Bat
Helmet with Face Mask
Face Mask is MANDATORY for ALL Pitchers
Catcher’s Gear – All Catcher’s must wear the required equipment per ASA Rules
NO METAL CLEATS
The teams of these leagues consist of 5th and 6th graders (for 12U league) and 7th grade through 12th grade (for 13U-18U league).  Girls fast pitch from a distance of 40 feet for 12U and 43 feet for 13U-18U. ASA Softball governs most of the rules in this league.  New rules introduced in these leagues are infield fly rule and dropped third strike rule.  Games will be limited to a one (1) hour and 15 minute time limit.


AJAA SOFTBALL SEASON
The Spring softball season typically starts around mid-April and concludes mid-June.  There will be tournaments for 8U through 13-18U targeted for mid-June.
The 6U league will finish the season with one final game under the lights typically on a Friday/Saturday night. 
Practices start (tentative dates!):
6U & 8U: Saturday April 13, 2019
10U and 12U: Monday, April 8, 2019
13-18U: Monday, April 15, 2019

** For the 2019 Spring Softball Season, every registered AJAA player will receive an Indians Knot Hole membership included with their registration.  Knot Hole membership cards will be distributed with uniforms.  For more information on Indians Knot Hole membership, please click HERE.  **Available for players 14 years old and under.

REGISTRATION
Regular Registration for Spring Rec Softball is open January 1, 2019 to February 28th 2019

Late fees start:
March 1, 2019 (6U - 12U); late registration closes March 7th 2019
March 22, 2019 (13-18U); late registration closes March 28th 2019
**Late registrations will only be accepted as roster space allows with an additional late fee of $25

DO NOT WAIT until the last minute to register. If there are any open spots to fill after registration closes we will reopen on a limited basis with an additional $25 late fee added.

PRACTICES AND GAMES
League Wide Practices start:  weeks of March 18th and 25th at AJAA Fields - NOT mandatory, but gives players opportunity to practice with all girls in their league.
Team Practices begin week of April 8th
Games start:
6U: April 27th
8U April 24th
10U: April 22nd
12U: April 23rd

EVALUATIONS
6U & 8U: No evaluations
10U, 12U and 13-18U Evals have been cancelled due to weather.  Drafts will be happening soon!
Uniform fittings at Avon High School March 9th from 5-7pm
No makeups – players will be put in a pool and selected at the draft

GEAR REQUIRED  
Uniform fitting will be March 9th from 5-7pm at Avon High School (enter through door 31 on the West side of the building).  If you aren't sure what size your player needs, you MUST attend uniform fittings (for all leagues).
AJAA will provide players with uniform shirts.  Players 10U and up are asked to purchase black softball pants and a fielding glove.  Cleats are encouraged (non-metal) but not mandatory. Players 6U and 8U may wear shorts or whatever they are comfortable in.

AJAA Fall and Spring Softball is not able to operate without volunteers.  We appreciate your support and your commitment to volunteer as a League Coordinator, Head Coach, Assistant Coach, or other Softball Committee positions.
